What to Do When You’re Undecided About Your Career

Don’t have a clue what to do in life? Well, you’ve come to the right place.

You’re doing your GCSEs or in are A-level and you don’t know what you want to do. Or maybe you’re in college doing your degree and have decided that it’s not your passion anymore.

The first and most important thing: don’t be scared. There are hundreds of people who are in your shoes.

School (Year 11, 12 or 13)

Don’t panic.

You have loads of time, even if it doesn’t feel like it.

That is one of the perks of still being young and in school. You have the energy and time to explore and put your feet in the water and try new things.

Why not take your summer, winter or Easter breaks and volunteer at different places. Volunteer at a pet clinic, hospital, or even a cafeteria if you can.

Devote your time to try different things and see what you like.

Also, if you do volunteer, don’t just volunteer for one day and decide “this is what I want to do for the rest of my life”. Picking a career is serious. It requires a lot of time, money and effort, so choose wisely. Spend a couple of days volunteering and look at the perks and negatives of the job; can you handle the downsides? Do you have a passion for it?

University or College

Now, if you’re in college and decide this isn’t the major/degree you want to do.

Then stop it!

“If you don’t enjoy your life now, you have to be brave and change it.”

Don’t get yourselves further into it then you already are. You should stop early rather than to continue and regret it later.

However, if you only have a few months left then it’s probably better if you finish your degree first! Just make sure you discuss with close friends and loved ones before doing anything sudden.

If you’re already done with University and have decided this isn’t your dream job or you don’t want a job in this field then that’s okay!

Don’t think of it as a waste, you got to learn a lot from taking a certain subject and having an extra degree doesn’t hurt when applying for jobs or different universities.

You have may feel you have come so far then why not just continue down the path that you are already in? Well, remember this: you still have a whole life ahead of you.

If you don’t enjoy your life now then you have to be brave and change it yourself.

No one is going to do it for you.

There may also be people who don’t want you to make a big change.

However, if you have thought it through and have decided that it is for the best, then there is no reason why you won’t be successful in whatever you want; listening to people is easy, however proving them wrong is harder.

What now?

  1. Talk with loved ones – however, be careful if they are not thinking in your best interests.
  2. Decide on an action plan – Volunteer? Apply to a new job? Change degree?
  3. Start now!
